The Southern Museum of Flight

began as a result of the hard work and commitment of Alabama Aviation Hall of Fame Member Mary Alice Beatty, who, with her husband, Alabama Aviation Hall of Fame Member Donald Beatty, was a pioneer in the establishment of the first airline routes and bases in Central and South America. As an early aviator herself, Mrs. Beatty accumulated and possessed a vast collection of aviation memorabilia and knowledge, and she was interested in establishing a home for this collection so that future generations could learn from the early years of air travel and the aviation field in general.
