During WW2, Lindbergh was a key figure in improving the performance of the P-38 aircraft. Working as a civilian contractor in the South Pacific during 1944, he was instrumental in extending the range of the P-38 through improved throttle settings, or engineleaning techniques, notably by reducing engine speed to 1,600 rpm, setting the carburetors for auto-lean and flying at 185 mph.
